Obituary for Peggyanne "Peg" Hickey

Peggyanne "Peg" Hickey
Peggyanne Carlon Hickey, of Allison Park, PA, passed away from cancer on February 10, 2018. Peggyanne “Peg” was born in Old Hickory, Nashville, Tennessee in 1934 and moved with her family to Richmond, VA when she was young. She loved being “Shorty” and hanging out with her father in his workroom and being his gofer/helper. It was at her home in Richmond that she met a visiting West Point cadet. She married Joe when only 16, just a month before he was shipped out to Korea in 1950. She was a supportive Army wife, moving 16 times throughout her husband’s career. She volunteered her services at post hospitals, thrift shops and teen centers and helped the other wives where ever they were stationed. She endured 3 years of hardship tours when her husband was in Korea and Vietnam.

She was a loving mother of 4 children, beginning when she was 18 and having her youngest at 36. She stayed home to look after each and welcome them home from school with undivided attention. One of their favorite family activities was winter sledding. Peg enhanced every home they lived in, using her woodworking, sewing and home improvement skills. Her favorite hobby was using her skills to create the family Christmas “yard” or village that always went under the Christmas tree. Peg constructed exquisite miniatures of family homes, churches and favorite shops. One yard even included a miniature Pittsburgh incline. After her children were grown, she began regularly taking Elder Hostel trips and was able to travel much of Europe and Russia. Before succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease, Peg was an active and successful Investment Club member, a deacon at First Presbyterian Church and worked at Hampton election polls. She was an avid antiquer throughout her life and loved finding hidden gems and fixing them up.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Joe; children, Peggy (David), Estelle, Mike and Margaret; grandchildren, Jexx (Amy), A.J. (Jeanice), Kevin, and Sam (Karla); 2 great-grandsons, Ron and Zephaniah; and a great-granddaughter, Hadley. Peggyanne was predeceased by her mother and father, William P. and Margaret Carlon, and her sister, Nancy Haas.

Friends and family will be received in the Eloise B. Kyper Funeral Home, 2702 Mt. Royal Blvd, Glenshaw, Pa. 15116 on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 3PM until 7PM. A Funeral Service will immediately follow in the funeral home chapel at 7:00PM. Interment will be Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
